Cascadia Mountain Weather

Cascadia Mountain Weather (CMW) is a project that I started with Kyle McCrohan in September of 2023 to offer better amateur mountain weather forecasts for the Cascades and Olympics of Washington State. I have been religiously following the weather of the PNW for more than a decade while Kyle has spent almost as long exploring/creating off-trail adventure routes through the mountains. We figured our combined passions for weather and outdoor adventure made us a perfect pair to breakdown current weather and trail conditions throughout the Cascades.

Near the end of every work week we release a 10-15 minute Youtube video breaking down the important features of the previous week’s weather and giving a detailed outlook for the coming 3-4 days. This information and analysis is also packaged in a weekly Instagram post released shortly after the video providing additional graphics to be shared on social media.

Weekly videos (10-15 minutes) focused on past, current, and future conditions. Each video is broken down into an overview of the past week (snowfall, warmer/colder than average, etc), a look at what’s coming up Friday-Sunday (precipitation, winds, temperatures, best days to travel), recreation recommendations (seasonal highlights, open snow resorts, best activities), and a quick glance 1-2 weeks in the future.

Every so often we also release specialized videos that focus more on a specific feature. In the past these have included:

  • El Niño impacts in the WA Cascades and what the 2023-24 winter might look like

  • The unique climatology behind Snoqualmie Pass’s snowfall patterns

Instagram

8-10 images shared weekly taken from a variety of sources and marked up to make them easier to understand. This is usually data that has already been shared in the video, but is altered to fit the more static Instagram format

Patreon

If you like our videos and the information we convey, becoming a member of our Patreon is a great way to support us. Together we spend 10+ hours a week putting all of this information together and displaying it in an intuitive way.

Currently our main tier option is $5/month which gets you more personalized recreation recommendations based on where we (Kyle and I) may be thinking about going for the weekend. This is also a great place to see all of our data links in one place!

Presentations/Collaborations

  • Do you have a weather oriented group in Western WA?

  • Are you trying to figure out how to better use online resources to plan outings/prepare for severe weather?

  • Reach out to me through my email (see below) or through the Cascadia Mountain Weather Socials and we can do an in person or virtual presentation for your group about the basics of forecasting weather in the Cascades.

  • So far we have done this for Search and Rescue Groups and educational groups, but we’d be happy to cater it for any audience!
