Aurora Nights on the Salish
Aurora Nights on the Salish
Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, WA
October 2021
The sun is awakening. For the last few years it’s been tranquil—a spotless record for months at a time—but last year a new solar cycle began. I’ve seen the aurora visit Washington twice, and I’m alerted that tonight might make a third time. Shortly after sunset I walk out, and it’s there—a faint green glow above the northern horizon. At first it’s just barely visible with the naked eye, but minutes later the colors activate and pillars shoot into the outer reaches of the atmosphere. A curtain snakes along the horizon and peaks above Mt. Baker as I whoop with joy.
