Illuminating the Ancient Ruins

from $30.00

Machu Picchu, Peru
July 2017

Machu Picchu is without a doubt the most famous tourist attraction in South America. It’s so popular that a daily tourist limit was not enough to keep numbers down, so they split the visitors in waves throughout the day. What this translated to in practice is I’ve been up since 3. Half an hour to prepare, half an hour to walk down to the bridge, wait an hour for the bridge to open, sprint up the mountain at 2,000 meters above sea level to beat the bus, wait in line for the ticket office to open, rush to the lookout to grab a few pictures before crowds swarm into the ruins. And then it was misty for the first hour, so none of my efforts made that much of a difference. But somehow, the mist has begun to clear and the tourists have evaporated and the sun beams are perfectly positioned to highlight the remains of the Inca.
